You may have seen people who eat a lot but are skinny. It’s frustrating for many obese people to see skinny guy eating as much as him but having a slim body. Let’s find out why this happens .
Genes
The body weight mainly depends on your genes. According to Michael Cowley, Director of Monas University Obesity and Diabetes Institute about 70 percent of factors which determine our weight are genetic in nature . I am a skinny guy . I think I got my genes from my skinny granny. If you have genes that favour lean body then you may not get fat even after eating heavily.
Set Point
Many scholars believe that our body has it’s own set point for weight. All our neural mechanism try to balance our body weight near the set point . So if you have lower set point, then your body will be constantly trying to keep you lean even if you consume heavy diet. It’s similar to SRK dialogue “Kehte hain agar kisi cheez ko dil se chaho … to puri kainaat usse tumse milane ki koshish mein lag jaati hai” . Set point is influenced mainly by gene , environmental factor and diet .
How you eat .
If you eat slowly and chew longer , brain releases messengers to convey your body that you are full and you will end up eating less.
If you eat quickly , then you will end up eating more.
Metabolic Rate
Some people have higher metabolic rate than others. So can consume more foods even without getting fat. Some people have low metabolic rate which can increase their weight irrespective of small diet. You can increase your metabolic rate by exercise .
Hormones and Sleep
Mainly two hormones are involved in maintaining appetite- leptin and ghrelin. Leptin reduces appetite whereas ghrelin increases appetite. Having less sleep ( fewer than 7 hours ) induces cortisol which increases ghrelin thus increases appetite and weight. So proper sleep is necessary for proper body weight.
